Have you ever noticed that Valentine’s Day takes place in the middle of Aquarius Season? Not during Venus-ruled Taurus Season or relationship-focused Libra Season, but under Aquarius; the zodiac sign most known for needing space and emotional detachment. 

This may seem strange, especially since the commercialized version of Valentine’s Day we celebrate in America is all about ooey-gooey professions of love, PDA, marriage proposals, red plastic hearts, and scotch-taped cardboard notes from cupid. 

But you know what else Aquarius is known for? Revolution. And opting to choose love over fear every day is a revolutionary act. As Jim Carrey once said (yes, THAT Jim Carrey), 

“...you'll only really ever have two choices: love or fear. Choose love. And don't ever let fear turn you against your playful heart.”

It is courageous and revolutionary to choose love when everything and everyone around you is guiding you in the direction of fear. When love doesn’t fit in with your perfect plans, when it looks different than what is considered the “norm”, or when you choose to embody love rather than search for it in other people, the risk of being misunderstood and even isolated from those around you is greater. 

That’s what Aquarius energy is all about. Celebrating your uniqueness, adopting the unconventional, and following your heart’s desire because that is your choice as a sovereign being. The freedom to be your authentic self is your birthright. This is where the Aquarian emotional detachment comes in handy. To be truly free, you have to detach from the personal feelings and beliefs that other people attempt to project on you. Doing so allows you to love yourself deeply and be brave enough to share your authenticity with the world. 

This particular Valentine’s Day is getting a huge cosmic blast of Aquarian energy. Not only is it Aquarius Season, but there are five major planets transiting Aquarius at this time— the Sun, optimistic Jupiter, structured Saturn, messenger Mercury (which is currently retrograde), and love-planet Venus.

Let’s chat about some of the most notable cosmic action taking place right now: 

Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius, which began on January 30th and ends February 20th, may have you reviewing and even questioning the current relationships you’re involved in to see if they are aligned with the person you are becoming. If not, you may have to have difficult conversations to determine the next best path. Mercury retrograde is also a time when exes may make a reappearance and it’s up to you to decide if it’s a cosmic test of self-worth or a second chance at love.

Venus moved into Aquarius on February 1st, and you may have noticed that you need a bit more space than usual. This doesn’t mean anything is wrong per se, your mind is just mulling over your greater purpose for your closest relationships. Questions such as; “I really care about this person, but where exactly are we heading? What are we really doing here?” Don’t stress yourself out too much worrying about it; the answers will soon come. 

There was also a New Moon in Aquarius on February 11th, asking us to set new intentions regarding our freedom, individuality, and the mark we want to leave on the collective. Embrace your “weirdness” as an act of self-love— this will inspire others to do the same. 

Whatever questions, concerns, or circumstances come up at this time will be a test of your patience, but rest assured that by the Full Moon taking place in discerning Virgo on February 27th, you will have a better understanding of yourself and what needs to be released for you to feel balanced.

Aries & Aries Rising

Be mindful not to let expectations about what a partnership “should look like” creep into your psyche. Remember this: all great relationships have a foundation of friendship first. If you’re entertaining a new heart-interest, keep things simple and ask yourself a few questions— has this person been a good friend to me? Do I feel comfortable showing up as myself knowing with confidence that the other person honors my authenticity? Can I hold space for this person without feeling drained? If the answer is yes, your path is bright!  

Taurus & Taurus Rising

You are fiercely loyal and go above and beyond for the people you care about. While this is admirable, be mindful of adopting the role of the provider so much so that people start to expect it from you. Though it feels good to help, you deserve to have just as much effort put into your wants and needs too! With your planetary ruler Venus currently in detached Aquarius, you may find that establishing personal boundaries can be the most loving act you do for yourself right now. 

Gemini & Gemini Rising

Your brilliant mind runs a mile a minute and anyone that wants to have a starring role in your life must understand this about you. Because Mercury, your planetary ruler, is retrograde right now, be mindful about overanalyzing every detail of your interactions with others. This can cause unnecessary anxiety and block you from the intimate and understanding partnerships you desire. Lean into love and release the fear. 

Cancer & Cancer Rising

You may cover up your giving nature with a hard crab-shell, but that’s only because you are afraid of getting hurt. Truth is, you have so much love and compassion for others, but sometimes you don’t feel that the same energy is reciprocated.
